World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops: Randburg haunt cracks the list

The Whippet, a popular café nestled in the heart of Randburg has been named one of the best coffee shops in the world.

Considered the official billboard for ranking coffee shops internationally, The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops recently unveiled their list for 2025 at CoffeeFest in Madrid, Spain.

The annual guide celebrates exceptional cafés across the globe, and this year included two establishments from South Africa.

The Whippet makes the Top 90

Leafy Linden’s trendy café bar—serving simple homemade dishes, craft beers and speciality teas and coffees—came in at Number 89.

The Whippet is located in the historic Old Linden Hotel. It opened its doors in 2012 with a vision to create a neighbourhood-inspired coffee shop.

“Back then and still now, we pay homage to the peach farming history of this amazing suburb,” The Whippet writes.

“We continue to believe in coffee excellence, food innovation, and a passion for people, design and architecture.”

Empowering women

Another novel feature of this suburban beverage hub is its women-only roasting crew.

“We source only the best beans, roasted by an all-female roasting team and then blended and made with passion and love by competition-ready baristas.”

How the winners are chosen

The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops rankings are determined through a combination of public votes (30%) and evaluations by a panel of coffee experts (70%).

Cafés are assessed based on various criteria, including coffee quality and barista expertise.

Customer service, innovation, ambiance, sustainability practices, and food quality and consistency are also considered.

Cape Town’s Espressolab Microroasters, located in Woodstock, came in at Number 11.

Topping the 2025 list is Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters in Sydney, Australia.
