On March 9, 2025, the news broke that WR Dante Pettis had re-signed with the New Orleans Saints on a one-year deal.
Like many professional football players, the 29-year-old Pettis is a former multi-sport high school athlete, competing in football, basketball, and track. He plied his trade in college as a Washington Husky, where he was a four-year player at the wide receiver and return positions.
Pettis was a 2nd round NFL Draft pick coming out of Washington and spent his first 2+ years with the San Francisco 49ers where he racked up 7 TDs on 38 receptions across 28 games. He spent the next year and a half with the New York Giants where he tallied a TD and 14 receptions across 5 games played. He then played for the Chicago Bears in 2022 where he got a lot more run, playing in 17 games and recording 3 TDs on 19 receptions.
After spending some time on and off in Chicago, the Bears placed Pettis on IR in August 2024, who later signed with the Saints practice squad on October 15, 2024. Pettis was promoted to the active roster on December 7th, 2024. Across his 12 games played in black and gold, Pettis racked up 120 yards and a touchdown on 12 receptions from 28 targets.
Although his stats aren’t jumping off the page, he certainly was able to step up at times last year in a position ravaged by injury and at a base salary of $1,170,000, he could certainly prove his worth as a depth receiver and a returner with the special teams. With the cap concerns in New Orleans, you need players like Pettis who have proven in flashes that they can produce on cap-friendly deals.
Also, he is a certified cat guy, and I think there should be more cat representation in the NFL.
