‘What happened?’: Gayton fat-shamed over ‘failed’ weight loss bid

Less than six months after vowing to continue his weight loss bid, Gayton McKenzie has been called “obese” during a public appearance.

The Minister of Sport, Art and Culture – the leader of the Patriotic Alliance – promised to live a healthier lifestyle after being sworn in. He also pledged to weigh in every week to reveal the results of his fitness journey.

GAYTON MCKENZIE ‘FAT-SHAMED’ OVER WEIGHT GAIN

Over the weekend, Minister Gayton McKenzie was invited to open the newly upgraded Klawer Sport Facility in the Western Cape.

In a video posted on X, the minister stepped out of a black SUV dressed casually in a black polo shirt, cargo pants, and designer sneakers.

However, the clip had many X users commenting on Gayton’s physical appearance instead of his positive outreach. Many of the comments under the clip “fat-shamed” the minister over his reported weight gain.

X user @realnorma_kay commented: “Obese Minister of Sports. South Africa is a joke”.

Others were just as cut-throat in their opinions.

@Chelsea1stNwa: “Why is the Minister of Sports so fat?”

@NtokozoNtando7: “He’s got three bellies back and front.”

KleenGreenWired: “What happened to him losing weight?”

According to a few, Gayton had “abandoned” his weight loss initiative on his social media platforms.

LACK OF COMMITMENT?

According to Gayton McKenzie, before being sworn in as Minister of Art, Sport and Culture, he weighed 146.6 kgs. He vowed to get fit by eating healthier and exercising. The politician also encouraged South Africans to join him on his fitness journey.

In his last social media weigh-in in October 2024,  the 51-year-old was happy to reveal he had lost an impressive 15 kgs. But after that, it was crickets from the outspoken personality.

It wouldn’t be the first time Gayton has reportedly fallen off the bandwagon.

In 2019, the reformed armed robber claimed he would undergo an intense weight loss plan.

Posting a screenshot of his then-weight – 145 kgs – he tweeted: “I am going to lose weight by training and eating healthy; I will be losing a minimum of 3kgs a week.

“I will shed 36kgs during my 90 days; I will post my progress every Monday”.

He added: “I challenge all Hustlers to join this challenge!”.
