‘They have not been the same since losing to Kaizer Chiefs’  – Fans react to Sundowns draw

Mamelodi Sundowns’ lacklustre performance against Al Ahly was blamed on last week’s defeat to Kaizer Chiefs.

Masandawana were dumped out of the Nedbank Cup last weekend by Amakhosi despite being favourites in that match. The 2-1 defeat saw the Brazilians’ 13-match unbeaten run against Chiefs come to an end.

On Saturday afternoon, Sundowns played to a goalless draw against Al Ahly in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final. Despite having over 70% of the ball, Miguel Cardoso’s side failed to trouble the Red Devils.

Following their disappointing home draw, some fans blamed Kaizer Chiefs for disrupting Sundowns’ momentum. The Brazilians looked out of sorts against Al Ahly and were lucky not to concede a few goals on Saturday afternoon at the Loftus Versfeld.

Fans on X (Twitter) felt the home team lacked confidence against the ‘team of the century’.

@LyfeSuperstaR wrote: “Kaizer Chiefs really damaged this Sundowns team’s confidence. They’re not the same anymore.”

@Maliqo wrote: “The problem is Cardoso planned for this game, then Chiefs happened. He need to change everything because of being a coward. If he knew that he was going to need Zwane for this game, why didn’t he give him minutes against those villagers?”

Kaizer Chiefs loss affected Sundowns, fans suspect

Cardoso made Sundowns play like Chiefs. The bubble is over,” @MANGENGE_ tweeted.

These are game stats where the home team got zero shots on goal. The away team got 2 goals ruled offside. The good work we did against Esperence only to be destroyed by Chiefs. This is Chiefs effect, no layer wants to commit mistakes,” tweeted @Maliqo.

“Ever since the Kaizer Chiefs win, Mamelodi Sundowns hasn’t been the same,” tweeted @msjmusa.

Can Sundowns still win the CAF Champions league?
