Pope Francis’ final popemobile is a Ram 1500 pickup truck modified to carry his coffin to his final resting place.
Modified 1500 features an open-air rear compartment – long enough to allow the coffin to fit in – as well a transparent canopy.
But, before being modified to carry his coffin, the same pickup had also serve as a Popemobile during Pope Francis papacy.
Pope Francis’ final Popemobile isn’t based on iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV but a Ram 1500 pickup truck that has been modified to carry his coffin to his final resting place on Saturday April 26th 2025.
Following his funeral at St. Peter’s Square on Saturday, his coffin was carried through the streets of Rome to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he became the first pope in nearly a century to be interred outside the Vatican.

The modified Ram 1500 pickup truck features an open-air rear compartment – that is long and wide enough to allow the coffin to fit in – as well a transparent canopy.
But, before being modified to carry his coffin, the same pickup truck had also serve as a Popemobile when Pope Francis ditched glass-sided G-Class, saying that it walls him off from people, despite the dangers of an assassination attempt.
As seen from the photos shared, the Ram 1500 is fitted with license plate “SCV 1” – Stato della Città del Vaticano (State of the City of the Vatican), with the number 1 symbolizing that it is for the Sovereign Pontiff.
Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday comes 6 days after the 88 year old Pontiff made his final public appearance on Easter Sunday in St. Peter’s Square with a short tour in the open-top Electric G-Class, before his passing the next day.
