  2. ‘Always concerned about goalkeeping, even when we were winning’published at 20:32 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It is a tough one. Because compared to the game against Brighton, the performance and reaction were good. At the moment, we are in a bad run. But we need to stick together and try to win games. I have a feeling we will go again if we win a game. Until that, we need to work hard and try to get the win as soon as possible.

“We created many chances. Last two games, we struggled with that and lacked a threat. Today, Pedro [Neto] played really well and we tried with him during the week. It works well with him. But we did not win and we have to be upset.”

On where they lost the game: “If you are not clinical, this league is always open – if you make a mistake, like we did in the second goal unfortunately. When we have the chance, we have to take that.”

“Once again today, we showed we can be good for long parts of the game. But that’s not enough. The performance has to be complete. We need to score goals when we have the chance and defend well, but I thought we defended well today. It is a moment were we were also a bit unlucky.”

On the goalkeeping situation: “I am always concerned, even when we were winning games, I was concerned. Now for sure. The problem with that with goalkeepers, it is a delicate position and when they make a mistake, everyone can see. Unfortunately today, our goalkeeper [Filip Jorgensen] made a mistake. This is a moment we need to support each other and try to stay strong.”

On Trevoh Chalobah’s injury: “He is back. Hopefully it’s nothing serious, but now we will see.”

  3. ‘Asensio and Rashford hungry to help the team’published at 20:30 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “You could see in the end the atmosphere was amazing. Us coming back into the game made it more special. We fought really well until the end and it was really important to get that win.

“We had a bit of a slow start. But we grew into the game. We had a few chances in the second half. We didn’t threaten enough in the first, but were much, much better in the second. We nullified their threat. They had a few chances but we were there to win the balls and win the game.”

On Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford: “You could tell tonight that they have a lot of quality. They are very hungry and they want to help the team. That is what we want from them.”

The Chelsea goalkeeper issues are self-inflicted. Djorde Petrovic was a solid keeper and liked by the fans. Why does the Board and Maresca prefer error-prone options instead, just because they are “better with the ball at their feet”? These kind of howlers have derailed us entirely.

  5. ‘When you make a mistake it is clear to everybody’published at 20:28 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to Sky Sports about Filip Jorgensen’s mistake: “The keeper position is very difficult. When you make a mistake is is clear for everyone. Today Filip did a mistake but in this moment he is our keeper and we need to stick together. [A problem position?] No, because in some games both have been brilliant, but as I said when you make a mistake it is clear to everybody.”

On Cole Palmer: “Cole is a top player. Top players always want to win and play an important part but today he could not. He has some great chances that he missed but nothing changes. We are very happy with him.

“We expect exactly what he can give us but I said many times we cannot rely on him for every game, We need all the team. Today was good but unfortunately we lost. We hate to lose but this is a bad moment.”

  6. ‘In this league you have to be clinical’published at 20:26 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to Sky Sports: “I think the performance and the reaction from the last game was vry good. Today was a tough one because we did not deserve [to lose]. Even after the 1-1 we had chances to score.

“We had some great chances and in this league you have to be clinical otherwise until the end anything can happen.”

On the attack without Nicolas Jackson: “I think in the last two games we struggled to get in behind, so we tried Pedro [Neto] there in the nine and I think it worked quite well.

“I think the team was good, they gave everything, the performance was good but unfortunately we lost and we are not happy. If we continue in the same way that we have been today then we can play an important part [in the table] until the end.”

On losing control of the game: “I think it is the dynamic of the game. There are moments you are more in control and you create chances, and then there are moments they do the same. You have to manage both. This is why we have said many times that the difference is inside both boxes.”

  7. ‘We have added quality and skill’published at 20:24 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking about his new signings: “This was the objective when we signed those players in the window – trying to improve our squad with the quality and skill these players have and how they can adapt with us quick.

“I think today and in the last matches as well, they are getting to the level we want. They have the experiences at the highest level. Be it Marcus [Rashford], Donyell [Malen] who played in the Champions League final and [Marco] Asensio. Lamare Bogarde was very good today and Andres Garcia also played 20 minute and was feeling very comfortable.”

On Asensio: “He is a number 10. He can get the tempo we need. He can get assists and also score goals as he did today. I need that.”

  8. ‘The players did everything’published at 20:23 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “In the last match at home [against Liverpool], we were playing more or less good but it wasn’t enough. We can get points by playing well but also by trying to avoid mistakes.

“Playing Chelsea today was a very good test. We started very badly – conceding the goal and not winning duels. But we were improving and in the second half, I was thinking we could be tired. But we were confident and dominated the match more or less. The players did a fantastic job. That was our plan. We played 90 minutes very consistent and focussed on our game plan. We had chances against Liverpool and Ipswich Town but we didn’t score.

“Chelsea had a very good chance with [Cole] Palmer but then we were getting offensively better and were getting two or three chances to score and we scored in the end. Getting this victory today is very important.

“Energy is very important. We were speaking in the dressing room at half-time we needed to recover energy. On the field, they had to transmit energy and in the second half, they did it. They did everything. The impact players were fantastic.”

  9. ‘Rashford enjoying every second’published at 20:20 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Jamie Redknapp
Former Liverpool midfielder on Sky Sports

It is incredible. This is exactly what [Marcus Rashford] needed to do. He needed to get back playing.

You have to enjoy playing football and if you can’t you are in the wrong sport. Right now he looks like he is enjoying every second of it. All the things that were thrown at him at Manchester United, he is now doing the opposite.

He has sweat on his face and he is not jogging around looking like he does not want to be here. He looks like he wants to be in that claret and blue shirt.

He has made a massive impact in the team already and you could not ask for more as a manager. He has been excellent so far.

  10. ‘Rashford has been superb’published at 20:19 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Steve Sidwell
Former Brighton midfielder on Sky Sports

He [Marcus Rashford] has been superb and the key to it is what Unai Emery said about giving him support and comfort.

Giving him all the tools and then it comes down to the player. Marcus has gone into an environment and culture that will get the best out of him.

  11. ‘Important Rashford feels confident and comfortable’published at 20:18 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Aston Villa

And here’s what Aston Villa boss Unai Emery had to say about Marcus Rashford’s start since his loan move, speaking to Sky Sports: “[We want to] Support him. Help him. Try to help him to feel comfortable here. Try to help him get confidence with us. Try to use the skill in our tactical idea, try to be demanding with him. He is in this process.

“Of course he played a fantastic 45 minutes. We now want to be consistent.

“Hopefully he is going to be important, like today, but then more and more and more.

“The most important for him is to try to be here with us and be confident and comfortable in a good atmosphere and this is my objective.”

  12. ‘We progressively got better’published at 20:17 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: “Of course if we had lost we would be worse [in the table]. Today we started very bad and conceded a goal, second in the duels, were late and slow on the press, not getting the players on the field as we planned.

“Then we progressively got better. Better in the duels, better in the second half overall. In the dressing room before we spoke about being ready for 90 minutes, how we wanted it to go, we wanted the sub players to be ready.

“We played on Wednesday and maybe we were getting tired. Morgan Rogers maybe has a little injury, Tyrone Mings went off, and we needed the subs to have a good impact and they did.

“The last two games we had chances at the end of the match and did not score. Today we had chances at the end and we scored.”

On the January signings making an impact: “We had the neccessity to improve the squad and to have more players to help with our objectives: trying to be in the top seven or eight and trying to compete in the FA Cup and the Champions League. Of course we brought the players in thinking about improving it. Then we have to try and adapt quick, a lot of meetings and getting information on the field.”

Right, back to Villa Park, where Unai Emery and Enzo Maresca have been reflecting on this evening’s match.

  14. ‘Congratulations to West Ham for the victory’published at 20:14 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Arsenal 0-1 West Ham

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Very painful loss. First of all, congratulations to West Ham for the victory. For big parts of the game, our performance was not at the level required. We lacked a lot of precision, quality, repetition of positive actions. We weren’t at our level and that allowed very simple giveaways.”

On failing to convert chances: “I don’t want to put it down to injuries. Our overall play and level was not at the level we needed and first of all it is my responsibility for that.”

On Myles Lewis Skelly’s red card: “We wanted to be more at it and we looked more of a threat. Then Myles gets sent off and it makes things even tougher and we could not score. Tomorrow is another day. We have to be very disappointed but we are still in February and there are many games to go. What happened today can happen to any team and we can only control what we do.”

But the big story of the afternoon was undoubtedly at the Emirates, where Graham Potter’s West Ham delivered a potential knock-out blow to Arsenal’s title chances.

  16. ‘It’s all coming together ‘published at 20:12 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Ipswich 1-4 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It was important. To get a bit of momentum and win away is important – a great day.

“I think we’re showing more quality, togetherness, defending strong and being clinical – it is all coming together which is really nice.

On scoring: “Sonny [Son] doesn’t need me to say how good he is. I’m so thankful he gave me those two assists.”

On his father, David Johnson giving him advice: “Of course, he helps a lot. He gives good advice. He is great with advice and I appreciate it a lot.

“We have to try everything that we can. We’re at a place now with clear goals and we want to climb the table and do well in Europe.”

  17. ‘We need to pick up points’published at 20:11 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Ipswich 1-4 Tottenham

    Ipswich Town

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “We had a great start to the game. I thought we were the better team in the first half, but we were not able to cash in on a good start.

“Their execution was top and our defending in those moments wasn’t good enough. They were clinical.

“Their level was higher taking the opportunities that came their way. We have conceded four goals – you cannot say we got everything perfect.

“We still played aggressively. So I think we did some good things, we created more than enough chances, but we have to keep working.

“We know the group is working well in many aspects. To win we have to improve, there is still improvements in the group.

“There is no doubt they’re on a good track, but we’re into February and the games start to tick along and we need to pick up points.”

On home form: “Strange that our home record isn’t as good as our away record – there’s a lot of different factors to that.

On Axel Tuanzebe’s suspension: “There is plenty areas we’re doing well. From an individual level, Axel Tuanzebe gets wrongly sent off last week, then he gets suspended for two yellows.

“We have to bring a new player into the team who isn’t up to speed with his team.”

  18. Postpublished at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time

Meanwhile, Ipswich Town’s heavy 4-1 defeat at home to Tottenham has left Kieran McKenna’s side five points adrift, with the three promoted clubs all in trouble.

But Tottenham are pushing on to the top half after building on last week’s win over Manchester United.

  19. Iraola ‘proud’ despite defeatpublished at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Bournemouth 0-1 Wolves

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I think the game is very affected by the red card. I analysed my team and I was very happy before it. We have been in the game but they punished us in the minutes after the red card where we have not probably established ourselves.

“From there we competed really well. It was difficult playing with 10 players for most of the game but the players have done a very good job. I am very proud of the performance of my players.

“The only observation I would make is if the referee sees it and says, ‘red card’ okay, but I have seen different angles. From one angle I don’t think it is but from another it does look like a red card, he tries to win the ball and slips over the ball and it is a dangerous fall…but clear and obvious, I don’t know?

“[Illia] Zabarnyi will now miss games, a player that has gone very clearly for the ball and touched it and is unlucky slipping. I don’t understand it. When I watched the replay with it in slow motion I thought, we were done.”

  20. ‘This is the spirit I want’published at 20:08 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Bournemouth 0-1 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves boss Vítor Pereira, speaking to Sky Sports: “The spirit of the team [pleased me most], we came here with the mentality not to draw but try to get three points in a very important moment of the season.

“Sometimes teams with 11 can lose positional balance and the other team plays more compact but for us it was important not to lose the ball all the time and not allow counter attacks because the goal will come. I think we deserved this result.

“When you are fighting to avoid relegation it is normal that emotions come to a level that is not easy to control but this is the spirit I want in my team competing, I don’t care whether it is away or at home.”

On opening up a five-point gap on the bottom three: “It was a very important win but now I am thinking about the next game. If we win the next game it will be very important to start playing with more confidence. If we achieve more points I think we will start to play at another level.”
